Fetal Cardiology Fellowship

Providing compassionate and comprehensive care for children diagnosed with congenital heart disease before birth.

What sets us apart?

For patients in Eastern Virginia and Northern North Carolina, Obstetrics and Gynecology is the main referral site for high-risk pregnancies with suspected fetal congenital cardiac anomalies.

The program performs over 2,000 fetal echocardiograms annually, including detailed first-trimester cardiac evaluations (at 11-14 weeks gestation).

What you'll learn

The Fetal Cardiology fellowship offers a balance of clinical experiences and research practice. Training in fetal cardiology at our institute allows the fellow to function independently as a fetal cardiologist and fetal echocardiographer.

Our program provides clinical fetal echocardiographic training, teaching, and academic/research activities.

Where you'll train

Hofheimer Hall

provides care for high-risk pregnancies and is the primary training site for Fetal Cardiology fellows. The clinic offers several subspecialty programs that focus on prenatal diagnosis and genetics, maternal transport, fetal cardiovascular care and care for expecting mothers with diabetes and HIV. Fellows work in a supervisory role at this clinic and collaborate with ultrasonographers, perinatal geneticists, perinatal dietitians and other support staff to deliver coordinated patient care.

Sentara Norfolk General Hospital

the primary teaching hospital for our institute, is home to the area's only Level I trauma center and burn trauma unit and the region's premier heart program. Sentara Norfolk General's obstetrics unit has about 700 maternal transports and 3,000 deliveries annually.

Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters

is the only freestanding children's hospital in Virginia. With 206 beds, it is the regional pediatric referral center for coastal Virginia and northeastern North Carolina. The hospital, a pediatric Level I trauma center, is home to the area's largest and most advanced neonatal and pediatric intensive care units, as well as the state's only acute inpatient rehabilitation unit.
