Join the Macon & Joan Brock Virginia Health Science's M. Foscue Brock Institute and Physicians Assistant Program, in partnership with Virginia Veteran and Family Support for our annual Military Cultural Competency and Transition Awareness training!

This activity is intended to assist students, resident physicians, community partners and behavioral health providers in better understanding, communicating and effectively interacting with military members, veterans and their families.

  1. Describe the military organizational structure, rank, branches of service, core values and demographics.

  2. Identify differences between the active duty, reserve components and National Guard.

  3. Identify characteristics of military transitions from active duty, deployment and reintegration to civilian life and the challenges that arise.

  4. Identify best practices to enhance behavioral health, treatment options and resources for military service members, veterans, family, and caregivers.

  5. Discuss the prevalence and characteristics of suicide among military service members and veterans.
